# Market research and audience insights for advertising

We find out who actually buys from you, what moves them and where to reach them. Then we put those answers to work in your media plan, not in a report that sits in a drawer.

**Proof**

- [Southern Phone](https://gudu.com.au/southernphone/) — full-service partner since 2021
- $13m+ in ad spend planned and managed
- 98% client retention

## What you get

- **An audience profile built from evidence.** Who your buyers are, how they decide, and which segments are worth paying to reach. Drawn from your own data and the market, never from assumption.
- **Competitor and category review.** Where rivals spend, what they say, and the gaps you can own.
- **Brand tracking.** Repeated survey waves that measure awareness and consideration over time, so you can tell whether advertising is shifting perception rather than just harvesting clicks.
- **Media consumption mapping.** Which channels your audience actually uses, matched against what each costs to appear in.
- **First-party data audit.** What your GA4, CRM and ad accounts already know about your customers, and where the blind spots are.
- **Message and creative testing.** Which propositions and executions earn attention before real budget goes behind them.
- **A written insights deck with decisions attached.** Every finding is paired with what it means for your plan: budget, channel, message, audience.

## How we do it

1. **Start with the decisions, not the data.** Our Advertising Director sits with you to list the calls the research has to inform: budget split, audience, channel, message. If a question won't change a decision, we don't research it.
2. **Mine what you already own.** We audit your GA4 property, Google Search Console, CRM exports and ad-account history (Google Ads, Meta) before buying any new data. Most businesses are sitting on more answers than they think.
3. **Layer in the market.** Ahrefs for category demand and competitor visibility, platform audience tools for reach and cost, plus category benchmarks. This is where your numbers get context.
4. **Run primary research where it earns its keep.** Surveys, brand tracking waves and customer interviews, commissioned only when your existing data can't answer the question. We write the questionnaires ourselves rather than outsourcing them to a template.
5. **Synthesise into a deck you'll actually use.** Segments, channel implications, message territories, and a straight recommendation on each open decision. We present it in person, and we'll argue for it if you disagree.
6. **Feed it into the work.** Findings flow directly into media strategy, buying and marketing mix modelling. Then we re-measure on a set cadence, because audiences move.

## FAQ

**What does market research for advertising cost?**

It depends on how much primary research your questions demand. A first-party data audit and market review costs far less than commissioned survey waves, and we always start there because the data you already own often answers most of it. We scope to the decisions you need to make and quote a fixed figure before any work starts, rather than putting research on an open-ended retainer.

**How long does an audience research project take?**

A first-party audit and market review typically lands within three to four weeks. Add survey fieldwork or customer interviews and you're looking at six to eight, because good fieldwork can't be rushed without wrecking the sample. Brand tracking is ongoing by design: waves run quarterly or half-yearly so you can see movement, not a single snapshot.

**How is this different from hiring a dedicated market research firm?**

A pure research firm hands you findings and leaves. We do the research because we're the ones spending your media budget against it, so every insight has to survive contact with a live campaign. If you need large-scale academic-grade fieldwork, a specialist firm is the right call and we'll say so. If you need research that makes your advertising work harder, that's us.

**What is brand tracking and do we need it?**

Brand tracking is a repeated survey (the same questions, put to the same kind of audience, at regular intervals) that measures how many people know you, consider you and prefer you. You need it if you're investing in advertising that builds the brand rather than just harvesting demand, because clicks won't tell you whether perception is shifting. If your spend is purely direct response, skip it for now.

**How should we judge whether research is any good?**

Ask what decision each finding changed. Good research names its sources, shows its sample sizes, separates what the data says from what the researcher thinks, and ends in recommendations someone is accountable for. Be wary of decks that only confirm what you already believed, and of any agency that won't show you the raw questions they asked.
